Brooke Shields recently shared heartfelt memories of her unique relationship with former President George H.W. Bush, describing him as a close confidant and like a grandfather to her, during her appearance at the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy’s New York Celebration of Reading.

At the event held at the Lotos Club, Shields, who is soon to release her book, “Brooke Shields is Not Allowed to Get Old,” reminisced about her fondness for the late president, affectionately referring to him as “Papa Bush.” She recounted how she used to seek his advice on personal matters, including her dating life in the early ’90s when she was seeing Kelly Gaines, whose father was an ambassador in Bermuda under President Bush.

Lauren Bush Lauren, Bush’s granddaughter and the event host, shared a light-hearted moment recalling how the former president “loved some good gossip.” Shields humorously detailed how Bush was always eager to hear about her romantic escapades and even gave his approval of her now-husband, Chris Henchy.

Shields shared an amusing anecdote from 2010, when she received a call from Bush while shooting a movie near the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. Without any formal introduction, Bush insisted that Shields visit him, a demand she eagerly obliged. During the visit, Henchy, despite being an infrequent golfer, was handed golf clubs by Bush and ended up playing with sports commentator Jim Nantz.

The actress also revealed how Bush continued to take an interest in her life and relationship, even during casual golf cart drives around the compound. “We’re driving around, and he’s like, ‘So, tell me how the relationship is. Good kids. I like the guy,'” Shields recalled, highlighting how Bush’s warmth and genuine interest made a significant impact on her.

Describing both George and Barbara Bush as parental figures in her life, Shields expressed how they played an important role during her formative years, providing guidance and support that she deeply cherished.
