Authorities in Florida are investigating a possible school shooting plot after a 17-year-old allegedly posted a threatening video online. The Sanford Police Department received a tip over the weekend about a video showing a young male making threats against Seminole High School. The video also featured the individual with several guns, vests, and other concerning items, according to a statement released on Sunday.
After a swift investigation, police identified the suspect as Timothy A. Thomas, 17. He was arrested and charged with intimidation through a written or electronic threat of a mass shooting or act of terrorism.
Arrest and Investigation
Thomas is a student at Elevation High School, which is about four miles away from Seminole High School. Officers located him at his home and arrested him without any resistance.
Upon searching the home, authorities found that the weapons seen in the video were actually realistic-looking Airsoft replicas, not real firearms.
Sanford Chief of Police Cecil Smith praised law enforcement for their quick response, saying their teamwork likely prevented a potential tragedy.
School and Law Enforcement Reactions
Superintendent of Seminole County Public Schools, Serita Beamon, also expressed her appreciation for the fast action taken by police.
“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We will continue to take every threat seriously and respond quickly,” Beamon stated.
