In a distressing incident that has sparked outrage and a call for heightened awareness of gender-based violence, a Boston man has been charged with multiple offenses following his attack on a transgender woman. The attack occurred last month on Halloween at the Maverick Station on the Blue Line, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
The victim, a 41-year-old transgender woman whose identity has not been disclosed, reported that she was both punched and kicked by the assailant, Gregory Burnett, 53. During the assault, Burnett allegedly hurled derogatory and transphobic insults at her, exacerbating the physical violence with verbal abuse. The victim attempted to defend herself but was forcibly pulled down by Burnett, leading to a fractured wrist after she fell.
District Attorney Kevin Hayden emphasized the community’s stance against such violence, stating, “We will never tolerate anyone being subjected to abuse — much less physical attack — for their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.” He reinforced the right of all individuals to use public transportation without fear of assault or harassment.
The assault was interrupted by other passengers who intervened to help the victim and halt the attack. The quick response of these individuals likely prevented further injury to the victim.
Authorities were able to quickly identify and arrest Burnett on November 12, thanks to descriptions from witnesses and evidence obtained from surveillance footage at the station. He has been charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, simple assault and battery, and a civil rights violation with injury.
The incident has raised concerns about safety and discrimination on public transit, particularly for transgender individuals, prompting discussions about how to better protect vulnerable populations in public spaces. The case is ongoing, and it is currently unclear if Burnett has obtained legal representation.
