Vasectomies and Birth Control Appointments Surge After Trump’s Election Victory

Share news:

Following Donald Trump’s win in the 2024 presidential election, Planned Parenthood reported a dramatic spike in appointments for vasectomies and other forms of birth control, signaling a wave of concern over potential changes in reproductive rights. The day after the election, November 6, saw a 1,200% increase in vasectomy bookings and significant rises in appointments for IUDs, birth control implants, and gender-affirming care.

Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, attributed this surge to fears regarding the future of reproductive healthcare under the new administration. “Patients are already preparing for the incoming Trump administration by taking control of their sexual and reproductive health care,” Johnson explained.

This uptick in appointments comes amid renewed debates over Planned Parenthood’s funding. President Trump’s administration, including figures like JD Vance, has expressed opposition to federal funding for Planned Parenthood, particularly criticizing the organization’s involvement with abortion services. However, data from the CDC indicates that only a small fraction of abortions occur after 21 weeks of pregnancy.

The administration’s stance is part of a broader initiative to curb what they consider federal overspending. Newly appointed heads of the Department of Governmental Efficiency, Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, have outlined plans to review and potentially cut federal expenditures, including funds allocated to organizations like Planned Parenthood.

In response, Planned Parenthood has defended its funding, emphasizing that federal money is crucial for providing necessary health services to thousands daily. “Planned Parenthood doesn’t get a blank check from the federal government,” the organization stated. They argued that like any healthcare provider, they are reimbursed for specific services provided to patients, countering claims of misuse of federal funds.

This issue remains contentious, with significant implications for healthcare access and reproductive rights in the United States. As the debate continues, Planned Parenthood is gearing up to protect the services it offers, especially those that could be affected by policy changes from the Trump administration.
