Dorchester County, MD – In a shocking turn of events, two Dorchester County men, Paul Ellwood, 43, and Edwin Krell, 46, have been arrested for allegedly setting fire to a duck blind in Hoopersville earlier this month. The incident, which caused $2,000 in damages, also led to the fire spreading into the surrounding marshland.
The blaze erupted at Bluff Point, prompting a swift response from the Hoopers Island Volunteer Fire Company. Five firefighters worked diligently, managing to contain the flames within 32 minutes. However, by the time they arrived, the fire had already extended into the nearby wetlands, raising concerns about potential environmental damage.
Following an intensive investigation, authorities determined the fire had been deliberately set. Once sufficient evidence was gathered, arrest warrants were issued for Ellwood and Krell. The two suspects were taken into custody without resistance while driving on Smithville Road in Taylor’s Island.
They were booked at the Dorchester County Detention Center and appeared before a court commissioner via virtual hearing. Both men were released on a $5,000 bond.
Ellwood and Krell now face multiple charges, including second-degree arson, conspiracy to commit second-degree arson, and both first- and second-degree malicious burning. Additionally, they have been charged with reckless endangerment. If convicted, they could face a staggering 44 years behind bars.
This alarming case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of arson and the severe legal consequences that follow. Authorities continue to investigate the full impact of the fire, particularly the extent of damage to the marshland ecosystem.
