On Friday, Donald Trump Jr., Elon Musk, and Joe Rogan had some fun online after Trump Jr. joked that Musk should buy MSNBC. This all started when news came out that Comcast plans to spin off its NBCUniversal cable networks, including MSNBC. Although these channels aren’t for sale, Trump Jr. saw an opportunity to poke fun at MSNBC, which has often been critical of his father, former President Donald Trump.
Trump Jr. posted a tweet to Musk, saying, “Hey @elonmusk, I have the funniest idea ever!!!” and shared a post that mistakenly said Comcast was selling MSNBC. Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion and renamed it X, replied with, “How much does it cost?”
Trump Jr. added, “I mean it can’t be much. Look at the ratings,” making fun of the network’s viewership. Musk joked back, saying the “most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely.”
The joke started gaining steam with support from Rogan and venture capitalist Shaun Maguire. Maguire joked he was ready to invest, saying, “Let me know if you’re looking for investors,” while Trump Jr. replied, “It started off as a joke, but based on the response, it sounds like a mandate.”
Rogan got in on the fun too, tweeting that if Musk bought MSNBC, he’d want Rachel Maddow’s job and promised to wear the same outfit and glasses while telling the same “lies.” Trump Jr. agreed, saying, “This is getting really interesting. It has to happen.”
Musk, always ready to join in, replied with, “Maybe I should show up there with a sink,” referencing his famous move when he bought Twitter. Trump Jr. then said he wanted in too, joking that he’d mimic MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell—minus the “castration” part.
It was all in good fun, but it showed how these prominent figures love to stir things up, using humor and jabs to make a point.
