A tragic incident unfolded in New York City over the weekend when a 73-year-old man lost his life while trying to escape a terrifying home invasion. It all happened early Saturday morning in Washington Heights, near 161st Street and Broadway.
The chaos began around 4:40 a.m., when three burglars broke into a sixth-floor apartment. According to reports, one of them climbed up the fire escape and slipped in through a window, letting the other two inside. Once in the apartment, they tied up a 40-year-old man and stole a gold chain worth about $8,000 and $200 in cash.
During the ordeal, the man’s father, Jacinto Remigo, made a desperate attempt to escape. Witnesses say he climbed out of the window and tried to reach another one by walking along a narrow ledge. Tragically, he was stopped by an air conditioner and lost his balance, falling onto construction scaffolding below.
Emergency services rushed Remigo to Harlem Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. Authorities are still looking into exactly how the fall happened while investigating the home invasion.
Neighbors are heartbroken. Heriberto Garcia, a friend of the family, shared how he saw the terrifying moment Remigo slipped and fell. “He was just trying to get away,” Garcia said, shaken by the tragedy.
Police are continuing their investigation, and the community remains on edge, hoping the suspects will be caught soon. For now, the neighborhood mourns the loss of a man who simply tried to protect himself and his family in an unimaginable situation.
