A man in his early 40s is facing at least nine years in prison for a shocking act of violence that all started over a bag of chips. Melvin Wright, 43, was sentenced to nine to 12 years behind bars after admitting to attempted murder and several other charges. The incident, which happened nearly a year ago, left people shaking their heads over how something so small could lead to such a serious crime.

On the night of November 28, 2023, Wright approached another man at a nightclub and casually asked if he could have some of his potato chips. When the man said no, things took a disturbing turn. Wright followed him outside and, in a fit of anger, shot him in the face. Miraculously, the victim survived. Despite his injuries, he managed to get himself to the hospital, where he spent six days recovering.

Summit County Prosecutors made it clear that Wright’s actions would not be taken lightly. After pleading guilty in October, he was convicted not only of attempted murder but also of illegally having a gun at a place with a liquor license and possessing a firearm despite being prohibited from doing so.

Once Wright finishes his prison sentence, his punishment isn’t over. For the next decade, he’ll need to register every year as a violent offender.

Elliot Kolkovich, the Summit County Prosecutor, didn’t hold back when addressing the case. “This was senseless violence, plain and simple,” he said. “Our streets are safer without Melvin Wright, and I hope this brings some peace to the community. The survivor has shown incredible strength, and we’re grateful for the hard work of the police and prosecutors in bringing justice to this case.”
