A tragic incident at a Maryland prison has sparked a murder investigation after an inmate was found dead in his cell. Authorities at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Cumberland are now working to uncover what happened to 28-year-old Robert Warren, whose death has been ruled a homicide.
The Maryland State Police shared that Warren’s body was discovered on Monday, and while another inmate is believed to be involved, they’re keeping the suspect’s name under wraps until charges are officially filed.
The North Branch Correctional Institution, known for housing maximum-security prisoners, has been at the center of some alarming incidents recently. Just a couple of weeks ago, on November 8, two correctional officers were stabbed by a prisoner in an unrelated attack at the same facility. Thankfully, the officers’ injuries were serious but not life-threatening, and they were treated at a nearby hospital. Other staff members who rushed to help sustained minor injuries. The prisoner responsible for that attack was unharmed and is being questioned.
In Warren’s case, investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services reached out to the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit to assist. After an autopsy confirmed Warren was killed, officials promised a thorough investigation. Once all the evidence is gathered, it will be handed over to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
This disturbing situation has once again drawn attention to the dangers within maximum-security prisons. For now, the focus remains on finding justice for Robert Warren and ensuring everyone involved is held accountable.
