A sheriff’s deputy in West Virginia had to act fast during a scary situation on Friday morning, leaving one person dead after shots were fired.

It all happened in Bolt, a small community about 40 miles south of Charleston. According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, they got a 911 call around 9 a.m. about someone who seemed mentally distressed and had a gun.

When the first deputy got to the home, the person immediately started shooting at him. The deputy fired back, hitting and killing the individual. Authorities haven’t yet shared the person’s name, as they’re still working to notify family members.

The deputy was hurt in the exchange and taken to a hospital. Thankfully, his injury wasn’t life-threatening, and he’s expected to recover.

The incident is now under investigation by the Raleigh County detectives and the West Virginia State Police to figure out exactly what happened.
