Robbery Details
On the evening of December 3, four individuals entered the GameStop located at 1751 West Howard Street. The assailants pepper-sprayed a 25-year-old female employee and seized keys to access cash drawers, escaping with $1,125 in cash and a $25 gaming headset.
Pursuit and Arrest
Unbeknownst to the robbers, a hidden GPS tracker was among the stolen items. This device enabled a Chicago police helicopter to locate and monitor the suspects’ red SUV as it traveled over 25 miles to the 13000 block of South Ellis Avenue on the Far South Side. Upon arrival, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled into a residence. Ground units, guided by the helicopter’s coordinates, converged on the location. A woman permitted officers entry, leading to the discovery of 18-year-old Dequan O’Neil hiding in a bathroom. The GPS tracker, emitting an alarm activated by the tracking company, was found concealed with cash in a box within the same bathroom.
Legal Proceedings
O’Neil has been charged with armed robbery. Notably, he completed juvenile probation less than a year ago for aggravated robbery involving a knife. Judge Susana Ortiz granted the prosecution’s detention request, citing the severity of the offense and O’Neil’s criminal history.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of armed robberies in the Rogers Park area. In February 2024, Chicago police investigated two early-morning robberies involving groups of armed men in the neighborhood.
