Tragic Hit-and-Run Accident, Beloved Bronx Football Coach Killed

December 6, 2024—The Bronx community is mourning the loss of 60-year-old Dwight Downer, a cherished football coach, who was fatally struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident early Saturday morning.

Incident Details

Shortly after midnight on Saturday, December 1, Coach Downer had parked his car near the intersection of Givan Avenue and Eastchester Road in the Baychester neighborhood. As he exited his vehicle to walk home, an out-of-control driver collided with him, resulting in fatal injuries. The driver fled the scene, and authorities are actively investigating the incident. Community Impact

Coach Downer was a dedicated mentor with the Bronx Buccaneers Youth Football Program and DeWitt Clinton High School. Known for his tough yet compassionate coaching style, he profoundly impacted many young athletes. Thirteen-year-old quarterback Manny Lora remarked, “He was never really easy on us because he wanted to bring out the best in all of us.” (ABC7 New York)

Vigil and Memorial

A vigil is planned for Coach Downer at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the Williamsbridge Oval football field, where community members will honor his legacy and contributions. (NBC New York)
