Vice President JD Vance drew attention after telling attendees at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest conference in Phoenix that white Americans no longer “have to apologize” for their race.
“In the United States of America, you don’t have to apologize for being white anymore,” Vance said Sunday at the conservative gathering. “We don’t persecute you for being male, for being straight, for being gay, or for being anything. The only thing we demand is that you be a great American patriot.”
Vance’s critics condemned the statement, accusing the vice president of being “hateful” and manufacturing a sense of victimhood.
Josh Cowen, a former Democratic congressional candidate from Michigan, called the remark “one of the most cowardly, pathetic, whining, dangerous, hateful, weak, and ridiculous statements ever made in modern politics.”
“JD Vance knows damn well he’s never been denied or shamed for being white. He’s doing this to whip resentment into grievance, and grievance into action,” Cowen tweeted.
Mario Pawlowski, who has nearly 100,000 followers on X, also dismissed Vance’s comment as nonsense.
“WTF this insecure little puppet is taking about?” Pawlowski tweeted. ” I am whiter than most MAGA and I never even thought that I have to apologize for being white.”
