In Crystal City, Missouri, police shot and wounded a man on Sunday after a dramatic series of events involving a car crash, gunfire, and a tragic discovery inside his vehicle.
It all started around 11:10 a.m. in Festus, a neighboring town of Crystal City. Someone called the police to report gunshots near a restaurant, according to Festus Police Chief Doug Wendel. Officers quickly responded and soon spotted a black pickup truck on the highway, believed to be connected to the incident.
When officers from Festus and Crystal City tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver didn’t stop. Instead, the truck slammed into a concrete median barrier and crashed near a store.
What happened next was intense. The driver, who was wearing body armor, got out of the wrecked truck and started shooting, said Crystal City Police Chief Chad Helms. Thankfully, no officers were hit. Two Crystal City officers fired back, hitting the man several times. He was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak.
But that wasn’t the end of the story. Inside the crashed truck, investigators made a chilling discovery: the body of a woman. Authorities believe she was already dead before the shooting began, but they’re still trying to figure out how she died, said Sheriff Marshak.
As of now, police haven’t released the names of the suspect, the deceased woman, or the officers involved. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to piece together exactly what happened and why.
This is a developing story that has left many in the area shaken, as police continue to search for answers.
