Apple AirTag Leads Police to Shocking CTA Train Robbery Suspects

Share news:

An Apple AirTag recently played a key role in helping police catch two suspects involved in a violent robbery on a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train.

It all started on Sunday, December 22, when police arrested Claude Elder, 44, and Christopher Owens, 19, in the Grand Crossing neighborhood near the 7600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. Just 35 minutes earlier, the two men had attacked a 20-year-old passenger on a Red Line train, according to the police.

The incident took place as the train traveled between the Sox-35th and Cermak-Chinatown stops. The suspects assaulted the man and stole his bike before fleeing the scene.

Fortunately, the bike had an Apple AirTag attached to it. This small tracking device, along with surveillance footage from CTA cameras, helped investigators track down the suspects and make the arrests.

Elder and Owens are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
