Uncounted Ballots Found: Wisconsin’s Election Oversight Sparks Outrage

Share news:

Lt. Kendria Donaldson from the Milwaukee Fire Department recently helped a voter navigate the election process, but an important discovery has stirred up concerns in Wisconsin. Nearly 200 absentee ballots from the November election were found uncounted, sealed inside containers during a post-election review. These ballots were discovered in Green Bay’s City Hall during reconciliation efforts.

The incident adds to the challenges faced by Wisconsin election officials, who are already working to improve how elections are managed. To tackle growing concerns about election transparency and integrity, the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) has proposed a $2 million plan to set up a new Office of Election Transparency and Compliance. The idea is to make election processes more open and accountable, especially after the heightened scrutiny following the 2020 presidential election.

WEC chair Ann Jacobs highlighted the need for this office, explaining that it will help restore public trust and ensure fair election practices. Commissioner Don Mills emphasized that the new office will focus on auditing voter registration lists, making it easier for the public to have confidence in how elections are handled.

In Grand Chute, poll workers are also working hard to ensure every vote counts. Meanwhile, in Madison, the City Clerk’s Office acknowledged the oversight and committed to making changes. They’ve promised to introduce a new system where polling locations will get a list of absentee envelope seal numbers to confirm all ballots are accounted for on Election Day. The office apologized to voters for the mistake, calling it a failure to meet their goal of ensuring every eligible vote is counted.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed her disappointment over the incident, describing it as a serious oversight that fell short of the city’s standards. She assured residents that her office will conduct a detailed review of election policies and take steps to prevent such mistakes in the future. The Mayor also offered a direct apology to affected voters, promising immediate corrective actions to maintain election integrity and transparency.

In Milwaukee, Mayor Cavalier Johnson echoed similar concerns, urging for strong measures to avoid such errors in upcoming elections. The discovery of uncounted ballots has sparked a renewed focus on ensuring that every voter’s voice is heard, and their vote is counted accurately.

Election officials across Wisconsin are determined to learn from this experience. They are committed to enhancing procedures, verifying processes, and rebuilding trust with voters. As the state looks ahead to future elections, the promise is clear: to ensure that every vote matters and is counted as it should be.

  1. okay, the article covers a complaint on process. However, there is no mention if those ballots should be counted and put into the poll number’s final result and announce new winners of a race if the numbers mattered. Any follow-up to be had?
