Firefighters in Stamford, Vermont, responded to a dangerous situation on Mill Road Friday morning and managed to save a home from a fire. But now, investigators say the fire wasn’t an accident—it was set on purpose.

According to officials from the Vermont Department of Public Safety Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, 31-year-old Joseph Pallas is accused of starting the fire deliberately. Authorities believe his actions were part of an insurance fraud scheme.

When the Stamford Fire Department arrived, the house was filled with heavy smoke, but thanks to their quick efforts, the home was saved from being completely destroyed. After the flames were out, investigators began piecing together what happened and determined the fire was the result of arson.

Pallas is now facing serious charges, including first-degree arson and insurance fraud. He has been cited and is scheduled to appear in court this coming February.
