House GOP Unveils New Rules for Next Congress, Including Key Change

Share news:

House Republicans are shaking things up with a new set of rules for the next Congress, and one change, in particular, is grabbing attention. According to Axios, a rule change that’s being called a “crucial alteration” could have a big impact on how easily a speaker can be ousted.

So, what’s the deal? Well, right now, if just one House Republican wants to challenge the Speaker of the House, they can. But under the new proposal, that lone Republican would need eight other co-sponsors from the majority party before they could force a vote to oust the Speaker. In simple terms, it’s raising the bar for anyone hoping to shake up the Speaker’s seat.

This new rule is part of a larger deal Republicans made in November, especially as they gear up to renominate Mike Johnson (R-LA) for Speaker.

But that’s not all. The proposed changes also include getting rid of the Congressional Diversity & Inclusion Office and changing the name of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability back to its original title, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Looks like the GOP is working on some major shifts, and this new proposal is just the beginning! Stay tuned for more updates.
