Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano Face Suspension from Boxing After Controversial Clash

Share news:

Katie Taylor will have to rest for at least 30 days after her controversial win over Amanda Serrano. The 38-year-old fighter managed to hold on to her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and IBO light-welterweight titles by winning via unanimous decision in a thrilling 10-round fight. The match was part of the co-main event of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

While the fight had plenty of excitement, with both women showing off their skills, the judges’ score of 95-94 for Taylor has caused some debate. This was especially true after Taylor got a point taken off in the eighth round due to a headbutt that worsened an already existing cut. After the fight, Serrano was clearly upset, saying, “I knew when it went to the judges, it was going to be a little shady.”

Serrano, who moved up three weight classes for the fight, showed off the serious cut on her face and explained, “I only fight the best. It is what it is. Every time you get a cut it hurts. You get blood in your eye.”

She also accused Taylor of being dirty in the ring, saying, “She kept headbutting me. We knew that from the first fight.” However, Taylor denied the accusations, saying the head clashes were accidents and that they sometimes happen in rough fights.

Both fighters will be sidelined for at least 30 days following the fight, as required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The rule is that fighters must rest three days for every round they fight, which means a 30-day break after their 10-round battle. If the doctors find any injuries, they might need more time to recover.

This wasn’t the first time these two squared off. In April 2022, Taylor also defeated Serrano in a close, split-decision fight at Madison Square Garden.

In other news, Jake Paul (aka “Problem Child”) extended his boxing record to 11-1 after beating the legendary Mike Tyson in the main event. Tyson, now 58, struggled in the ring against Paul, who is 31 years younger. Paul won the eight-round match by unanimous decision.
