How the GOP Could Slash $5 Trillion — And Shatter Healthcare

Share news:

On Friday, some Democratic lawmakers and critics of the Republican party voiced their concerns after a document obtained by Politico surfaced. This document is being seen as the latest sign that the GOP’s plans for the future could hurt working families across the nation.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) reacted strongly, saying, “Americans just want higher wages and lower costs. Republicans? They want to take away your healthcare.” These words came after Republicans gained control of both the House and Senate, gearing up for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in just a week.

According to Politico, the document, which came from the House Budget Committee led by Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas), lists potential spending reductions amounting to $5.7 trillion. However, the committee insists this isn’t a proposal but just a “menu of options” to consider.

The proposed cuts would target programs like healthcare, social support, and climate initiatives, all aimed at offsetting the costs of Trump’s expensive policies, including his tax cuts and immigration plans. Critics, however, believe these cuts would benefit the wealthy while leaving working families struggling.

Key Proposals and Criticism:

  • Health Programs: The first two sections focus on slashing healthcare, including cutting $420 billion by repealing Biden-era regulations and $479 billion from Medicare, which provides health coverage to seniors.
  • Medicaid Cuts: Medicaid, which covers low-income individuals, could see up to $5.7 trillion in cuts, with changes such as work requirements and reduced federal support for state-run programs.
  • Affordable Care Act (ACA): Republicans are looking to cut $151 billion from ACA-related programs, including limiting eligibility and rolling back preventive health funding.
  • Support for Families: Proposals also target social safety nets like food assistance (SNAP) and TANF, cutting $347 billion from these vital programs for low-income families.
  • Climate Policy Rollbacks: The GOP is proposing cuts to climate-related policies, totaling $468 billion, including pulling back on electric vehicle initiatives and green energy grants.

Rep. Carrie Rheingans (D-Mich.) summed up the concerns perfectly: “To make billionaires richer, Trump wants to kick millions off healthcare and starve families. How is this supposed to help working families thrive?”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) faces an uphill battle as he seeks to pass the proposed cuts. With some Republicans already warning against cuts to green energy and other programs, it remains to be seen how these ideas will fare in Congress.

Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) shared her frustration on social media, saying, “Republicans want to cut vital food and healthcare support to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and large corporations. The GOP wants working families to foot the bill for their billionaire handouts.”

The proposals have sparked a fierce debate, and it’s clear that many see this as a direct attack on the well-being of working-class Americans. As these discussions unfold, one thing is certain: the stakes for families are high.
