A Springfield man is now behind bars after being connected to a series of armed robberies across the city. Police say 31-year-old Willie Duke targeted multiple businesses, brandishing a firearm and fleeing with cash.
The spree began late Saturday night when Duke entered a store on Walnut Street. Armed with a gun, he robbed the clerk, making off with an undisclosed sum of money. Police believe he continued the pattern, hitting other stores in different neighborhoods throughout Springfield in the days that followed.
On Sunday, officers spotted a vehicle matching Duke’s description in the Six Corners area. When approached, he fled from law enforcement but was eventually caught on Ashley Street after a brief pursuit. He was taken into custody and charged with three counts of firearm and masked robbery, as well as failing to stop for police.
Duke’s arrest brings relief to local businesses and residents who had been on edge following the string of incidents. Authorities are working to gather more evidence and warn others to be vigilant.
This case serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by armed criminals and the importance of community cooperation in preventing violence.
