Expert Warns of Possible ‘Mass Casualty Attacks’ by Putin Against NATO

Share news:

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the possibility of Russia carrying out mass casualty attacks on NATO countries. It’s a concerning idea, but one that experts say we shouldn’t ignore. Keir Giles, a well-known Russia expert from Chatham House, recently shared his thoughts with Newsweek, sounding the alarm over the potential dangers Russia might pose to the West.

Why is this a big deal?

Relations between Russia and the West are at their lowest since the Cold War. Moscow has been hinting that it might target NATO members in retaliation for their support of Ukraine during the ongoing conflict.

What sparked these fears?

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made some serious accusations, claiming Russia is planning “acts of sabotage,” including air terror targeting airlines. He made these comments after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Warsaw this week. Tusk stressed how serious the situation is, and he’s not alone in his concerns.

Has Russia already taken action?

It’s not just talk. In November, Western intelligence agencies reported that Russia might have been behind a plot to plant incendiary devices in packages headed to the U.S. and other places. This plot is believed to be connected to fires in NATO countries like Germany and the UK. Poland’s security agency has also linked Russian special services to a rise in incidents within Poland and other NATO countries.

Of course, the Kremlin denies any involvement. They’ve dismissed these claims as baseless accusations from the West.

Why would Russia attack?

So, why would Russia even consider such extreme measures? According to Giles, Russia might carry out these attacks to retaliate for what it sees as unfavorable decisions made by the West, like the U.S. easing restrictions on long-range missiles supplied to Ukraine.

But there’s more to it. Giles suggests Russia could be using these attacks as a reconnaissance or test run for something bigger. It’s possible they’re probing logistics networks and key transportation hubs across Europe, with the aim of disrupting NATO countries in the future.

And here’s the real kicker: Russia has shown a willingness to cause chaos, regardless of the innocent lives lost. For them, it’s all part of the strategy.

Could the U.S. be a target?

What about the United States? While President-elect Donald Trump has promised to end the war quickly, there’s speculation about how his approach could affect Russia’s plans. If Trump sides with Putin, as many expect, Russia might not have much reason to target the U.S. But if Trump takes a harder stance, well, that’s a different story. This could lead to Russia turning its attention to North America as well.

What are the latest statements?

Prime Minister Tusk confirmed his fears of Russian air terror not only affecting Poland but potentially airlines worldwide. Meanwhile, Russian officials, including Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, have quickly dismissed these accusations, calling them unfounded and typical of Poland’s stance.

What’s next?

Even with the uncertainty surrounding U.S. politics, concerns in NATO countries about potential Russian attacks are unlikely to disappear anytime soon. The future of relations with Russia remains uncertain, and for now, experts like Giles warn that we must stay vigilant.

In the coming months, it seems that the West will have to keep a close eye on Russia and prepare for anything. The situation is tense, and only time will tell what will happen next.
