A man accused of killing his older sister in her Rock Hill, South Carolina home made his first court appearance recently, sharing a cryptic message with those watching.
Anthony Lopez, 39, is charged with murdering his sister, 53-year-old Lisa Rosenzweig. The tragic incident came to light on November 9, 2024, when police conducted a welfare check at Lisa’s home and found her dead. Rock Hill, located near the North Carolina border, was shaken by the news.
Authorities named Lopez as a suspect almost a month later, on December 6. He was arrested the same day in Charlotte, North Carolina, and was brought back to South Carolina on Thursday.
During his court appearance on Friday, Lopez addressed the media directly. Looking into the cameras, he said, “Follow God’s law and man’s law,” while nodding his head. In a surprising twist, he chose not to have a lawyer and decided to represent himself in court. If convicted, Lopez could face the death penalty.
Reports from local media indicate that Lisa Rosenzweig died from a head injury. A local contractor, who had access to her home, helped officers enter when they arrived for the welfare check.
Neighbors in the quiet Rock Hill community expressed their shock and sadness over what happened. Betty Taylor, who lived next door to Lisa, shared her disbelief. “I would like to find out that it was an accident and it wasn’t somebody that came in and abused her. She didn’t deserve that. She didn’t,” Betty said.
Lopez has been denied bond and is currently being held at the York County Detention Center. The case has left the community searching for answers as they grapple with the loss of Lisa and the circumstances surrounding her death.
