In San Francisco, a tragic car crash on Sunday evening left one person dead and sent others to the hospital. Police have detained someone they believe might be responsible for the devastating collision, which involved seven vehicles and eight people on Sixth Street between Harrison and Bryant streets.
The crash may be connected to an earlier hit-and-run incident on Interstate Highway 280. According to the California Highway Patrol, at about 6:09 p.m., a black Tesla collided with four other vehicles on the highway. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in that incident, and no one needed to go to the hospital.
Just moments later, the scene turned chaotic downtown. Among the cars involved in the Sixth Street collision was a self-driving Waymo vehicle, which was damaged in the crash. However, officials haven’t confirmed how or if it played a role in the accident. The San Francisco Fire Department received a call about the crash around 6:10 p.m. When emergency crews arrived, they found a heartbreaking scene. One person and a dog had died on the spot. Another person was rushed to a trauma center with serious injuries, while others only had minor injuries or didn’t need medical attention.
The aftermath of the crash was shocking. Debris was scattered across half a city block, a sign of how powerful the collision was. A spokesperson from the fire department described it as a high-energy crash.
Police say they’ve detained a possible suspect driver who is now in the hospital for treatment. They’re investigating whether alcohol or drugs were involved.
