Share news:

In a tragic turn of events in Aliamanu, Honolulu, police have arrested a man and woman, both 33 years old, in connection with a deadly fireworks explosion that shook the community on New Year’s Eve. The pair, identified as Ruben Mateo and Jewel Cabras, face charges for reckless endangering, putting a minor at risk, and several fireworks-related offenses.

Authorities say Mateo and Cabras were at a gathering where they not only set off illegal fireworks themselves but also allowed their three children—ages 15, 10, and just 1 year old—to handle and ignite the dangerous explosives. Sadly, the youngest child was injured in the explosion and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment. Thankfully, the toddler has since been released and is recovering.

The explosion left the community heartbroken. Three women and a 3-year-old boy lost their lives in the devastating blast. More than 20 others were hurt, with six victims suffering such severe burns that they were flown to a specialized burn center in Phoenix, Arizona. As of the latest update, all six remain in medically induced comas as doctors fight to save them.

The Honolulu Police Department has stated that this is an ongoing investigation and more arrests are expected in the coming days.
