Many conservatives in America often say, “A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.” This phrase is frequently linked to former President Ronald Reagan, a respected Republican leader. However, today’s Republican Party, especially those who support Donald Trump, has moved away from Reagan’s principles. Despite this, they still use his famous quote to push for strict immigration policies.
Several Republican lawmakers, including Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and Representatives Richard Hudson, Tom McClintock, Nancy Mace, and Elise Stefanik, have used this phrase in speeches, social media posts, and legislation. Even Trump, who has often claimed to be more influential than Reagan, has repeated it throughout his political career.
While border security is important, a nation is defined by more than just its borders. Laws, which are outlined in the U.S. Constitution, play an even greater role in maintaining order and justice.
Ignoring the Rule of Law
Laws in the U.S. come in different forms—constitutional, statutory, administrative, and common law. These laws are created by the government and enforced by the courts and police. However, since the beginning of Trump’s second term, his administration has ignored many established laws, taking actions without proper legal authority.
Some examples include:
- Attempting to end birthright citizenship, which is protected by the Constitution.
- Shutting down government agencies without Congress’s approval.
- Making diversity programs illegal.
- Firing civil servants without due process.
- Blocking government payments, violating financial laws.
- Removing government watchdogs illegally.
- Changing funding rules for universities without approval.
- Accessing Treasury records without authorization.
Legal Challenges and Pushback
Trump’s disregard for the law has led to numerous lawsuits. Several states have sued his administration, resulting in court rulings against his policies. For example, his attempt to end birthright citizenship has been blocked by nationwide injunctions.
Judge John Coughenour, a Reagan-appointed judge, criticized Trump’s actions, stating, “The rule of law is a bright beacon which I intend to follow.” The American Bar Association also condemned the administration’s disregard for legal principles, calling it chaotic and unacceptable.
Despite these legal challenges, some Republican leaders, including Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson, have defended Trump’s actions. Vance falsely claimed that judges have no power over the executive branch, and Johnson agreed.
Republicans often argue that a nation needs strong borders to survive. However, their willingness to ignore the rule of law undermines their own argument. A country without laws is just as vulnerable as a country without borders. The real strength of a nation lies in both its secure borders and its commitment to upholding justice and democracy.
