Hope Returns: Highland Park’s July 4th Parade Continues

Share news:

Highland Park is planning to hold its Independence Day parade again this year, marking the second time since the tragic mass shooting at its annual parade on July 4, 2022, that claimed seven lives.

The city announced that the parade will take place on July 4 at 11 a.m. and will follow the same route as it did in 2024. This year’s theme is “dream team,” encouraging people to celebrate unity and teamwork.

Like last year, there will be no fireworks display. The city explained that this decision was made due to concerns about community trauma, environmental impact, and the well-being of pets.

Mayor Nancy Rotering stated that the parade represents the community’s patriotic spirit and commitment to supporting one another. She emphasized that the “dream team” theme highlights the importance of working together towards a shared goal and being strong as a community.

Residents are encouraged to wear jerseys and clothing representing their favorite teams and organizations to embrace the theme.

After canceling the July 4 parade in 2023, Highland Park held a procession instead. In 2024, the city brought back the parade as a way to reclaim the route and honor the victims of the 2022 attack.

Before this year’s parade, a remembrance ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. to honor those affected by the tragedy. More details about the ceremony will be announced later.

Additionally, the city has planned a community festival on the evening of July 3 at the Preserve of Highland Park, located at 1207 Park Ave. W.

The parade will begin at First Street and Laurel Avenue, passing through downtown Highland Park before ending at Sunset Woods Park. There will be no official event following the parade.

This year’s parade aims to bring the community together in remembrance and celebration while fostering a sense of unity and resilience.
