Breaking: Congressman’s Office on Alert Over White Powder Scare

Share news:

A suspicious package containing a white powdery substance was sent to the New York office of Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.) on Thursday afternoon. As a safety measure, the office was immediately evacuated, and authorities are now investigating the substance.

Langworthy, who represents New York’s 23rd Congressional District, shared the news on social media. He stated that the package arrived at his Clarence office earlier that day, and once the white powder was noticed, law enforcement and Capitol Police were notified immediately. Following protocol, the office was evacuated while authorities conducted their investigation.

In his post, Langworthy reassured the public that the safety of his staff and visitors was his top priority. He advised those in need of assistance to contact his Washington office or other district offices in Jamestown, Olean, or Corning until the Clarence office reopens.

Langworthy has served the 23rd Congressional District, which includes parts of western Upstate New York, since 2023. He previously held the position of chair of the New York State Republican Committee.

The Mirror reached out to Langworthy via social media and also contacted Capitol Police for further comments.

Authorities discovered the white powder in an envelope that was mailed to Langworthy’s office. The incident comes amid concerns over similar suspicious packages sent to election officials in multiple states.

In September 2024, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced an investigation into several suspicious packages sent to election officials in over 15 states. While no injuries were reported, officials were worried, especially with the election just two months away at that time.

Suspicious packages were sent to officials in states such as Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, and Rhode Island around September 17, 2024. Earlier that week, similar packages were also mailed to officials in Mississippi and Connecticut.

The FBI has been collecting these packages, some of which contained unknown substances. FBI spokesperson Kristen Setera stated that the agency is working with partners to determine how many packages were sent, who was responsible, and the motive behind them. As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that safety remains their top priority.
