A 74-year-old Michigan man, John Bromley, is facing serious charges, including domestic abuse and impersonating a police officer.
Homeless Couple Found Squatting in a Cabin
In June 2024, Michigan State Police responded to a report of two people illegally living in a cabin. When officers arrived, they found Bromley and his wife, a 68-year-old woman, who had been homeless and staying in the cabin without permission.
Officers spoke with the woman and noticed she had severe bruises and was struggling to breathe. She was immediately taken to the hospital for medical care.
Victim Dies After Alleging Domestic Abuse
The woman was treated at two different hospitals, where she told police she had been a victim of domestic abuse. Unfortunately, a few days after her admission, she passed away.
Bromley Caught Impersonating a Trooper
Following his wife’s death, Bromley attempted to gain access to the morgue by pretending to be a Michigan State Trooper. However, hospital staff recognized the deception and denied him entry.
Arrest and Charges
Bromley was arrested on February 9 in Oakland County during a routine traffic stop for speeding. Officers took him into custody and transported him to Otsego County Jail.
Earlier this week, Bromley appeared in court for his arraignment. He faces charges including:
- Aggravated domestic violence
- First-degree vulnerable adult abuse
Additionally, he is facing separate charges in Grand Traverse County for impersonating a police officer.
Bail and Next Steps
Bromley remains in custody on a $50,000 bond. If convicted, he could face serious legal consequences.
Authorities continue to investigate the case to determine if additional charges will be filed.
