California may soon have an official state cryptid, and it’s none other than Bigfoot! A new bill introduced in the state legislature aims to recognize the legendary creature as a symbol of the Golden State.
The bill, proposed by Assemblymember Chris Rogers, would make Bigfoot an official mascot of California. The state has a long history of Bigfoot sightings, dating back to the late 1950s, particularly in northern California. According to reports, the creature has been spotted in heavily forested regions, making it a well-known part of local folklore.
What Is a Cryptid?
A cryptid is a creature from myths and legends that people claim to have seen but has never been scientifically proven to exist. Bigfoot is one of the most famous cryptids, but other well-known examples include the New Jersey Devil, West Virginia’s Mothman, and Mexico’s Chupacabra.
A Fun Bill With a Serious Purpose
Chris Rogers, who represents northern California counties known as “Sasquatch territory,” introduced Bill 666 on February 14. He joked about the decision, saying, “The question of which mythical creature best represents California is a hairy one.” However, he noted that Bigfoot is the creature that attracts the most attention from outdoor enthusiasts.
Rogers admitted that the bill was originally just a placeholder, meant to be amended later. But given the serious issues facing the state, he felt it provided a fun and lighthearted moment for lawmakers and the community.
How Bigfoot Became Famous
Bigfoot’s legend began in 1958 when loggers in northern California discovered huge, 16-inch footprints near Bluff Creek. A local newspaper, the Humboldt Times, reported on the discovery, and the name “Bigfoot” stuck.
Since then, Bigfoot has been a major part of California’s folklore. One of the most famous pieces of “evidence” is a 1967 video that allegedly shows Bigfoot walking through the woods in Six Rivers National Forest, near Willow Creek. This small town has fully embraced the legend, boasting a Bigfoot museum, a Bigfoot-themed restaurant, and even a Bigfoot golf course.
Ongoing Sightings and Bigfoot Fever
Bigfoot sightings are not just limited to California. In 2023, people in Connecticut reported hearing strange howls that lasted for over 10 minutes. Meanwhile, a video from Oklahoma’s Parallel Forest went viral last October, with many claiming it captured a glimpse of the elusive creature.
While scientists remain skeptical, Bigfoot continues to be a source of fascination. If the bill passes, California will officially recognize Bigfoot as its state cryptid, cementing the creature’s place in history.
