An Illinois man, Steven Griffin, 44, has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly abusing and torturing his 16-year-old stepson, Daniel Garza. The teenager died a week after being found unresponsive, severely beaten, burned, and malnourished.
According to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office, Griffin subjected Daniel to extreme cruelty. He is accused of throwing hot water on him, hitting him in the head with nunchucks, stomping on his ankle, and depriving him of food and water.
Teen Suffered Severe Injuries
Daniel had been living in hotels in Springfield with his mother and stepfather. On January 27, he was taken to St. John’s Hospital in critical condition. He weighed only 94 pounds, and his body temperature had dropped to 86 degrees—far below the normal range.
Doctors found that Daniel had a brain bleed, burns on his face, neck, and chest, multiple bruises, and fractures to his shoulder blade and ankle. He had suffered repeated blunt force trauma and extreme neglect, prosecutors said.
The teen was later transferred to a children’s hospital for specialized care and then moved to Indianapolis for further treatment. Unfortunately, he passed away on February 7.
Charges Against Griffin
Griffin faces multiple charges, including:
- First-degree murder
- Aggravated battery
- Aggravated domestic battery
- Endangering the life or health of a child
- Abuse or criminal neglect of a person with a disability
In addition to these charges, Griffin is also facing separate charges of sexual abuse and exploitation involving a 16-year-old girl in an unrelated case.
The case has shocked the community, with many calling for justice for Daniel Garza. Prosecutors say the investigation is ongoing, and more details may emerge as the trial progresses.
