Columbia, S.C. – In a deeply disturbing case, three individuals—including the parents and grandmother—have been arrested for the abuse of two infants under the age of one, authorities confirmed.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a Columbia hospital on January 31 after medical staff reported signs of physical abuse on the infants. Upon investigation, officers identified the suspects as the children’s parents, Amos R. Mobley Jr., 24, and Daija Benjamin, 23, along with their paternal grandmother, Anita Hingleton-Mobley, 62.
Authorities charged each individual with two counts of inflicting great bodily injury upon a child after inconsistencies in the parents’ statements raised suspicion. Warrants were issued on February 24, and all three suspects voluntarily surrendered on March 3 at the Alvis S. Glenn Detention Center.
Despite the horrific nature of the case, officials confirmed that the infants, though abused, did not suffer life-threatening injuries. They remain under medical supervision as authorities continue their investigation.
This tragic incident has left the Columbia community in shock, sparking renewed discussions on child safety and the importance of reporting suspected abuse. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.
