Could Aaron Rodgers Be Eyeing a Future in Politics?

In the new trailer for Aaron Rodgers: Enigma, released on Dec. 3, the legendary quarterback finds himself facing a surprising question: could politics be in his post-NFL playbook?

As Rodgers poses for a photo alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the former presidential candidate drops the big question: “Have you thought about going into politics?” It’s a moment that hints at an intriguing new chapter for the 41-year-old athlete, who has spent two decades dominating on the football field.

The documentary comes at a crossroads in Rodgers’ life, both professionally and personally. His 2023 season with the New York Jets ended abruptly after an Achilles injury, leaving fans and critics wondering if the Super Bowl MVP of 2010 might finally retire. “I’m trying to beat back Father Time and the expectations,” Rodgers reflects in the film.

The question of a political career isn’t entirely out of left field. Last spring, rumors swirled that Rodgers was on Kennedy Jr.’s shortlist for a vice presidential pick. While flattering, Rodgers had to make a choice. “I love Bobby,” he said at the time. “We had some great conversations, but the options were clear: retire and join him or keep playing. I chose to keep playing.”

But the documentary doesn’t shy away from the challenges Rodgers has faced off the field. He candidly talks about the personal cost of his public stances on controversial topics, admitting, “I lost friendships, family… It was heartbreaking.”

In an interview with PEOPLE in November 2023, Rodgers opened up about his mental health struggles following his devastating injury. “It’s been a grind,” he shared. “Frustration, sadness—a lot of sadness.” Still, he expressed deep gratitude for those who supported him during his recovery. “People brought me food, checked on me, called me, FaceTimed me. I’m so thankful for everyone who showed up when I needed them.”

With Aaron Rodgers: Enigma set to hit streaming platforms on Dec. 17, fans will get an up-close look at the quarterback’s journey, his challenges, and the burning question: what’s next for one of football’s most iconic figures? Whether it’s politics, retirement, or another season on the gridiron, Rodgers’ next move is sure to be as compelling as his career so far.
