An Amber Alert led to a tense but successful resolution in Edgefield, South Carolina, as deputies apprehended a man wanted in connection with a child abduction case. Early Sunday morning, while many across the state were awakened by the alert, deputies in Edgefield County were already out on Highway 25 North, on the lookout for Zackery Steven Cosgrove.
Cosgrove, a 28-year-old suspect, was being pursued by law enforcement following an investigation by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Authorities accused him of stealing a black 2019 Nissan Rogue with his 9-year-old niece still inside the vehicle.
The stolen car was soon spotted on Highway 25 North, and Edgefield County deputies jumped into action, turning on their lights and sirens. The chase didn’t last long. Cosgrove eventually pulled over near the intersection of Highway 25 and Jake Bryan Road.
Deputies carried out a felony car stop, safely securing the young girl without any issues. Thankfully, she was unharmed. The stolen car was also recovered. Cosgrove was immediately taken into custody and later handed over to Oconee County deputies and SLED for further processing.
He was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center, where he now faces charges of grand larceny exceeding $10,000 and kidnapping. At his initial hearing, Cosgrove was denied bond and will remain in custody until his next court appearance before a General Sessions judge.
The community can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing the child is safe, and authorities have taken swift action to address this alarming situation.
