In a recent statement, President Joe Biden didn’t hold back when speaking about President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to end birthright citizenship in the U.S. He called it “awful” and stressed that it goes against the core values of the nation.
During a White House press briefing, Biden noted that the transition to Trump’s administration was moving forward smoothly, but he did mention some internal issues within Trump’s team regarding the handover process.
As we approach the anniversary of the January 6th, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Biden was asked whether he still viewed Trump as a threat to democracy. His response was clear: Trump’s actions that day were indeed a “genuine threat to democracy.” He referred to Trump’s false claims of winning the 2020 election and his call for supporters to storm the Capitol as dangerous, saying, “It should not be rewritten… I don’t think it should be forgotten.”
Biden also addressed concerns about white supremacy, calling it one of the many threats facing the country. “We are the most diverse, multicultural nation in the world. That’s what makes us strong, and it’s what makes us who we are,” he said.
On Trump’s controversial plan to eliminate birthright citizenship, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, Biden was firm: “The idea we’re going to change a constitutional birthright… If you’re born here, you’re not a citizen? What’s going on?” he questioned.
Biden, a Democrat, also took a swipe at Trump’s opposition to bipartisan immigration reform. Trump had urged lawmakers not to support a bill that Biden backed to strengthen border security, calling it “ridiculous.”
As Trump continues to rally his base around issues like immigration in the lead-up to the 2024 election, Biden is steadfast in defending the values he believes make America strong, fair, and democratic.
