Biden’s Bold Foreign Policy Legacy: “I’m Leaving a Strong Hand for the Next Team”

In a speech at the State Department, President Biden spoke about the progress his administration has made in strengthening the U.S.’s global position, particularly in the face of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Sudan. He emphasized that his administration has built stronger international partnerships and weakened key global adversaries.

When Biden became president four years ago, he worked to rebuild relationships with global allies and rejoin international agreements that the Trump administration had left, such as the Paris climate agreement. Biden pointed out that NATO is now stronger than ever, and more of its members are contributing fairly. He also claimed that adversaries like Russia and Iran are weaker than when he took office.

Biden highlighted the situation in Ukraine, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to defeat Ukraine and weaken NATO have failed. He also praised his work in rallying international support for Ukraine while avoiding direct conflict between nuclear powers.

Regarding Iran, Biden said that Iran’s economy is in dire straits and that its main proxy, Hezbollah, is badly weakened. He also mentioned the ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages taken by Hamas in Israel, a priority for his administration, though a deal has yet to be finalized.

Biden acknowledged the deaths of U.S. soldiers during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, but emphasized that he ended America’s longest war. He expressed grief over the loss of 2,461 American lives in the conflict, including the 13 service members who died in an attack during the evacuation.

Looking forward, Biden warned of significant challenges ahead for the incoming Trump administration, including tensions in the Middle East, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and North Korea’s growing threat. However, Biden expressed confidence that his administration is leaving a strong legacy, with stronger alliances and a more powerful U.S. position on the global stage.

Despite some critiques, Biden argued that the U.S. is in a better place than four years ago, leading globally, with fewer adversaries and stronger ties with allies. He credited his experience with world leaders for helping navigate these complex international issues.
