Colten Tyrone Small, also known as Colton Swan, has been sentenced to five years and seven months in prison for assaulting a woman with a knife during an argument on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. Following his prison sentence, Small, 22, will also serve three years of supervised release.
Small pleaded guilty in September 2024 to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The incident took place on May 3, 2023, when Small, armed with a butcher knife, punched the victim—referred to as Jane Doe—in the face during a confrontation at a residence in Box Elder. The altercation escalated, with Small slicing Doe’s face. A witness who saw the assault intervened, attacking Small. The incident occurred amid some alcohol and fentanyl use.
Doe was treated at Northern Montana Hospital in Havre for her facial injuries. The case was investigated by the FBI and Rocky Boy’s Law Enforcement and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana.
