A 14-year-old boy who had been missing for seven years was finally found in Colorado, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.
Abdul Aziz Khan disappeared on November 17, 2017, and his case was even featured on Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries. However, on February 23, 2024, police found him after receiving a call about a possible break-in at a home in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
How the Police Found Abdul
The homeowner, whose house was for sale, saw two people enter through the back using surveillance cameras. Around 3:37 p.m., deputies arrived and noticed a car in the driveway with two children inside.
A man and a woman came out of the house and told officers they were working with the realtor. However, the police became suspicious. When questioned further, the man handed over an ID that belonged to a deceased person, and the woman claimed she had no identification.
After running a fingerprint scan, officers identified the woman as 40-year-old Rabia Khalid, Abdul’s mother, who had an active kidnapping warrant. The man was identified as 42-year-old Elliot Blake Bourgeois, her husband (but not Abdul’s father).
Arrest and Charges
Both Khalid and Bourgeois were arrested and charged with:
- Second-degree kidnapping
- Forgery
- Identity theft
- Providing false information to police
- Trespassing
The two children were taken into protective custody, and officers confirmed that one of them was Abdul. The identity of the other child was not released. Their future will be determined by the courts.
To comfort the children, the deputies gave them food and even let them watch Blue’s Clues at a neighbor’s house while the investigation continued.
A Long-Awaited Reunion
Abdul’s father, Abdul Khan, and Khalid had separated in 2014 and had ongoing custody battles. Khalid moved from New Orleans to Atlanta for work before the kidnapping, which made it difficult for the father to see his son. On November 17, 2017, Khalid failed to appear at a custody hearing in Atlanta, and both she and Abdul disappeared—until now.
Abdul’s family released a statement expressing their joy and gratitude:
Sheriff Darren Weekly praised his team for solving the case and bringing Abdul home after so many years.
