Newport, KY – A shocking shootout erupted in broad daylight Wednesday evening near Patterson and Thornton Streets, leaving residents in fear and prompting a swift police response. Two suspects have been arrested following the terrifying exchange of gunfire.
Newport Police say they received reports of shots fired around 5:30 p.m. When officers arrived, the suspects had already fled the scene but were later apprehended.
Home security footage captured the chilling moment when gunfire rang out, with bullets flying dangerously close to homes and children playing nearby.
“I was inside when I suddenly heard gunshots. I ran outside to check on my kids in the backyard, and I was terrified,” said witness Gabe Smith.
Longtime resident Arnold Sandlin, who has lived in the area for nearly 60 years, said he has never seen violence like this before. “It wasn’t this bad decades ago. But recently, it’s been happening more often. In the last three or four days alone, there have been four shootings.”
Neighbors say the rising violence is alarming. “You could just be sitting on your porch and get hit by a stray bullet,” Sandlin added.
Police have not yet released the identities of the suspects or details on what led to the shootout. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident has left the community shaken.
Residents are now calling for stronger police presence and action to prevent further violence. “Something has to change before someone gets seriously hurt,” Smith emphasized.
Authorities urge anyone with additional footage or information to come forward as the investigation continues.
