Denver Broncos linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested Sunday night after being accused of assaulting a police officer.
Wilhoite, 38, was booked into the Denver downtown jail and is facing a charge of second-degree assault on a police officer. He’s set to appear in Denver County court on Monday morning, according to reports from KUSA’s Mike Klis. So far, there’s been no word on what exactly led to the arrest.
The Broncos quickly acknowledged the situation with a brief statement: “We are aware of a situation involving Michael Wilhoite that occurred Sunday and are in the process of gathering more information.”
Wilhoite’s journey to the NFL has been anything but typical. After going undrafted from Division II Washburn University in 2011, he had to prove himself in the United Football League before finally getting a shot in the NFL. He played as a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks before transitioning to coaching. He joined Sean Payton’s staff with the New Orleans Saints in 2019 and 2020, then spent two years coaching linebackers for the Los Angeles Chargers. In 2023, Payton brought him on board with the Broncos.
As the situation unfolds, the team and the public await more details on the incident.
