Two brothers from Oakland are in serious trouble after being arrested for a freeway shooting that happened during the busy evening commute. The incident occurred on Interstate 580 near Park Boulevard in Oakland, turning rush hour into a tense and dangerous situation.
It all started on November 8, just after 5 p.m., when the victim’s car was rear-ended on a city street in Oakland. What seemed like a regular fender bender quickly escalated. The victim realized they were being followed onto westbound I-580, and moments later, gunfire erupted. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the situation could have been far worse.
The California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate Division took the lead in investigating the case. Using footage from nearby surveillance cameras, detectives identified the suspects: Kevin Martinez-Hernandez, 25, and Ruben Martinez-Hernandez, 22, both Oakland residents. Their trail didn’t stay cold for long. Earlier this month, the brothers were spotted driving on Claremont Avenue near Grizzly Peak Boulevard in Oakland.
On December 2, at 6:20 a.m., CHP detectives, with help from Oakland officers and a K-9 unit, arrested the brothers. During the arrest, police found an unregistered, loaded gun. The two were taken to Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail, though their names no longer appear on the online inmate roster.
Here’s what they’re facing:
Kevin Martinez-Hernandez is charged with attempted murder, assault with a firearm, shooting at an occupied vehicle, carrying a loaded gun, conspiracy to commit a crime, and being an accessory after the fact.
Ruben Martinez-Hernandez faces similar charges, including attempted murder, assault with a firearm, shooting at an occupied vehicle, carrying both a loaded and a concealed firearm, allowing someone to fire a gun from his car, and being an accessory after the fact.
This incident serves as a chilling reminder of how a simple traffic accident can spiral into violence. The good news? No one was physically hurt, and the suspects are now in custody. Authorities are continuing to piece together exactly what led to this dangerous encounter.
