The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) has shared more details about a hit-and-run crash that happened Friday night in Buckhead. The incident unfolded on Piedmont Road NE, near Peachtree Road, leaving many shaken but, thankfully, no injuries were reported at the scene.
Here’s how it all started: a gray Kia sedan was speeding at 61 mph in a 35 mph zone on Roswell Road NE, near Honor Avenue. A state trooper spotted the car and attempted to pull it over, but the driver refused to stop, triggering a chase.
As the pursuit continued, the Kia collided head-on with an Atlanta Police Department patrol car. The crash occurred on Piedmont Road NE as the police car was heading north and trying to make a turn. The impact left the patrol car severely damaged.
What happened next was like a scene from a movie. The people inside the Kia jumped out and took off on foot, heading towards a nearby parking garage. A state trooper managed to catch up with one of the fleeing individuals, but the rest of the group got away. After some investigation, the detained person was identified but turned out not to be the driver. They were released shortly after.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta police officer who was in the patrol car was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for medical care. As of now, there’s no update on the officer’s condition.
This hit-and-run has left the community on edge, and authorities continue to search for the people responsible. If you know anything about what happened, you’re encouraged to come forward and help with the investigation.
