A Florida lawyer, Mark Roher, is facing legal trouble after allegedly hitting a man on the head with a dinner plate at a wedding reception. The incident took place on January 18 at the Boca Lago Country Club in Florida.
Roher, who specializes in bankruptcy and commercial litigation in Miami, reportedly became angry when two young girls cut in front of him at the prime rib station in the buffet line. Witnesses say he tried to confront the father of one of the girls, Syed Raza, but Raza ignored him.
According to a police report from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Roher then struck Raza on the head with a dinner plate without provocation. The situation quickly escalated into a fight involving several wedding guests. Roher allegedly grabbed Raza’s collar, leading to a chaotic scene at the reception.
Roher Claims He Was the Victim
After the brawl, Roher claimed he was the real victim. In police body camera footage, he stated that multiple people had beaten him up, but he could only identify one person who kicked him. “I want to press charges against him because out of the numerous people that beat me up, he’s the only one I could identify as kicking me,” Roher said.
The police report also noted that Roher admitted to pushing Raza first. However, he denied hitting him with the plate. He also complained about being “paraded” in front of people during his arrest, to which a deputy responded, “We’re putting you exactly in the [patrol] car.”
Possible Consequences for Roher
Roher was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and might lose his law license. His attorney has stated that they plan to plead not guilty.
Despite the dramatic incident, Raza did not suffer serious injuries. He only had a red bump on his head.
As a result of the altercation, Roher and his wife have been banned from the Boca Lago Country Club for a year.
