California Raw Milk Producer Encouraged by RFK Jr. to Apply for FDA Position

Share news:

Mark McAfee, CEO of Fresno-based Raw Farm, LLC, has been encouraged by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s transition team to apply for the role of “FDA Advisor on Raw Milk Policy and Standards Development.” McAfee has submitted his application, aligning with Kennedy’s advocacy for raw milk and his nomination to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Background

Raw Farm, under McAfee’s leadership, is the nation’s largest producer of raw milk, operating two farms in California. The company offers products like whole milk, cream, kefir, and cheese, which are legally sold within the state but are restricted from interstate commerce due to FDA regulations.

Recent Challenges

Recently, Raw Farm faced a suspension of its raw milkfter tests detected the H5N1 bird flu virus in their products. The California Department of Public Health issued a recall for items produced between November 9 and 27, and the farms were placed under quarantine. McAfee has complied with the recall and is sourcing milk from unaffected regions to resume operations.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to head HHS, is a known proponent of raw milk. He has criticized the FDA’s stringent regulations on raw milk sales, describing them as “aggressive suppression.” Kennedy’s stance has garnered support from various groups advocating for natural and unprocessed foods.

McAfee’s Vision

McAfee emphasizes the importance of implementing high standards and proper training in raw milk production. He aims to ensure that any policy changes under Kennedy’s leadership are constructive and prioritize public health. McAfee’s commitment includes farmer education and rigorous testing to maintain product safety.

Looking Ahead

While McAfee’s appointment is not yet confirmed, his potential role could signify a shift in FDA policies regarding raw milk. Advocates anticipate more lenient regulations, while critics express concerns about public health risks associated with unpasteurized dairy products.
