A tragic and intense series of events unfolded in Louisville, Kentucky, on Sunday afternoon, leaving one woman dead and the suspected shooter in custody after a dramatic encounter with police.
The story began around 1 p.m. on January 5, when officers were called to a shooting on Cypress Street, in the 1300 block. They found a woman who had been shot multiple times. She was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital, but sadly, she didn’t survive.
As investigators worked to piece together what had happened, they identified Joshua Miller as the suspect in the shooting. Officers immediately began searching the area for him. Just a couple of hours later, at around 3 p.m., they got word that Miller had returned to the same spot on Cypress Street where the earlier shooting occurred.
When police arrived and tried to approach him, the situation took a dangerous turn. Miller reportedly opened fire on the officers. In response, they fired back, leading to a tense foot chase. During the pursuit, officers shot Miller at least once, according to Louisville Metro Police Chief Paul Humphrey. Despite his injuries, Miller is expected to survive and was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. Once he’s discharged, he’ll face arrest and charges related to the incident.
Chief Humphrey confirmed that the entire event was captured on police body cameras. The footage is expected to be made public within the next 10 business days, giving the community a closer look at what happened.
This shooting marks the second officer-involved incident for Louisville Metro Police Department in just 24 hours. On Saturday, officers were involved in a fatal shooting of a man suspected of shooting an Orange County, Indiana deputy.
The back-to-back incidents have put the department under scrutiny, with the promise of transparency through body camera footage offering some reassurance to the public. For now, the community is left to grapple with the heartbreaking loss of a woman’s life and the violence that disrupted their neighborhood.
