Two students were shot, one fatally, at Antioch High School in suburban Tennessee on Wednesday morning in what local authorities have described as a tragic shooting incident. According to Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), the shooter, a 17-year-old male identified as Solomon Henderson, opened fire inside the school’s cafeteria at 11:09 a.m. The gunman, armed with a handgun, struck two students, a 16-year-old female and a male student.
The female student, identified as Josselin Corea Escalante, was critically injured in the attack and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The other student, a male, sustained a grazed wound to his arm but is currently in stable condition at the same hospital. Additionally, another male student was treated for a facial injury, though it was not caused by a gunshot.
Immediately following the shooting, Henderson reportedly turned the weapon on himself and took his own life. The shooting prompted an immediate response from school officials, who placed Antioch High School on lockdown. The school has approximately 2,000 students, according to the Metro Nashville Public Schools district.
At the time of the shooting, two student resource officers (SROs) were present at the school but were not located near the cafeteria. By the time they arrived at the scene, the shooter had already taken his own life. The police are still investigating the incident, though they have confirmed that the shooter acted alone.
In response to the tragedy, a family assistance center was set up at the nearby Ascension Medical Group office to provide support for students and their families. The incident has shaken the local community, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Antioch High School shooting adds to a growing concern over school violence in the United States, prompting renewed discussions about school safety measures and the accessibility of firearms.
