Chicago residents should prepare for more snow and dangerously cold temperatures as winter weather continues through the weekend and into next week.
Snowfall Forecast
Snow began falling Friday evening and is expected to return on Saturday afternoon, according to Kevin Donofrio from the National Weather Service. Most areas will receive between 1 to 3 inches of snow, but areas north of the city could see up to 4 inches.
By Sunday night, temperatures will drop to around zero degrees, and the cold will last well into the next week.
Extreme Cold Early Next Week
Monday and Tuesday will be the coldest days, with wind chills dropping to minus 15 to minus 20 degrees. Although temperatures may improve slightly later in the week, the wind chill will still make it feel well below zero most days.
Warming Centers in Chicago
To help residents stay warm, the Salvation Army’s Freedom Center at 825 N. Christiana Ave. will be available as a warming center. Chicago’s official warming centers will also be open, though hours may be affected on Monday due to Presidents Day.
The Salvation Army also operates Chicago’s 311 shelter transportation service, offering free rides to warming centers for those who call 311.

These centers operate Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., when temperatures fall below 32°F. Some libraries and other public buildings also offer warmth and may have different hours.

Cold Weather Safety Tips
The Office of Emergency Management and Communications advises residents to take precautions during the extreme cold:
✔ Stay indoors if possible. Avoid unnecessary trips outside.
✔ If you must go out, limit your time outdoors.
✔ Wear layers of loose, warm clothing.
✔ Keep your head, hands, and feet covered when outside.
✔ Bring pets inside to protect them from the freezing temperatures.
✔ Prepare your vehicle by winterizing it and keeping emergency supplies on hand.
With dangerously cold weather ahead, it’s essential to take these steps to stay safe and warm.
