A Delta Air Lines plane crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, leaving at least 15 people injured, including a child. The flight was arriving from Minneapolis when the accident happened.
Video footage shared on social media showed the aircraft upside down on the runway. Passengers were seen evacuating the plane as smoke rose from the site. According to reports, 80 people were on board, and all were safely evacuated. However, two passengers are in critical condition.
Earlier that day, Toronto Pearson Airport had posted on X (formerly Twitter) about ongoing runway clean-up efforts. A snowstorm over the weekend had left nearly 9 inches (22 cm) of snow at the airport. The airport staff worked hard to clear snow from the runways to ensure safe landings and takeoffs. They had also mentioned that Monday would be a busy day with around 130,000 travelers on 1,000 flights.
Following the crash, emergency responders rushed to the scene, and several injured passengers were taken to local hospitals. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) confirmed that their staff was helping affected families at the arrivals area. Flight operations were temporarily halted but resumed later in the evening.
One passenger, who filmed the aftermath, shared his experience in a video. He said, “We just landed in Toronto, and our plane crashed. It’s upside down. Most people seem okay, and we’re all getting off.”
This incident is one of several aviation accidents involving U.S. aircraft in recent weeks.
Last month, an American Airlines plane and a U.S. Army helicopter collided midair near Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport, killing 67 people. It was the deadliest aviation disaster in the U.S. since 2001.
Shortly after that, a medical transport plane crashed in Philadelphia, killing all six people on board, including a young girl receiving treatment.
Earlier this month, another minor incident occurred when a Japan Airlines plane struck the tail of a parked Delta plane at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Fortunately, no one was injured in that incident.
Investigations into the Delta crash at Toronto Pearson are ongoing. Authorities will examine what went wrong and whether the snowy conditions played a role in the accident.
For now, airport officials continue to monitor flight operations while ensuring passenger safety. Travelers flying in and out of Toronto Pearson are advised to check for any delays or updates from the airport.
