In Bellevue, Washington, a tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon at the Sunrise Senior Living facility on Northeast 20th Street. An 87-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing his wife to death inside their residence at the senior living facility.
The police were called around 1:50 p.m. after people reported hearing screams coming from the couple’s room. When officers arrived, they found the door barricaded. Once they managed to force their way inside, they discovered an 86-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds to her chest. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her husband was taken into custody immediately. He later waived his right to attend his first court appearance on Tuesday and is currently being held on $2 million bail.
“This is not something we usually see involving people of this age,” said Bellevue Police Captain Landon Barnwell, reflecting on the shocking nature of the case.
Investigators are now working to piece together what led to this heartbreaking event. They recovered a knife from the scene and are also looking into whether there were any warning signs or previous incidents of violence between the couple.
Sunrise Senior Living released a statement expressing their sorrow, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones impacted, and we are committed to supporting our residents and team members during this time.”
Police noted that this marks Bellevue’s first homicide of the year and highlighted how rare violent crimes involving elderly individuals are in the community.
As the investigation continues, this tragic story has left many grappling with questions about what could have led to such a devastating act. More details are expected to emerge in the coming days. Stay tuned for updates.
