A tragic incident in Indianapolis has left a young woman seriously injured and her unborn child dead. On Sunday evening, police were called to a home in the 700 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found 25-year-old Kayla Netherland in the bathroom, suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital, where doctors were able to stabilize her, but tragically, they could not save her baby, who was five months along.
According to court documents, the suspect in the case is Kayla’s estranged husband, 36-year-old Jeremy McBride. Around the time of the shooting, one of Kayla’s friends had come to the house to do some laundry. When she walked in, she saw McBride standing over Kayla’s body. Without saying a word, McBride left the house, leaving the friend to call the police. The friend later told officers she believed McBride was the one responsible for the shooting.
Using license plate tracking, police were able to locate McBride and pulled him over. As he got out of his car, the vehicle, which wasn’t in park, rolled away and hit a pole. McBride reportedly told the officers, “I was going to turn myself into the police station,” and asked, “Is she okay?” Officers found a gun and handwritten notes in his car. The notes were addressed to Kayla, expressing his frustrations over their failed marriage, his insecurities, and his feelings about wanting children with her.
Investigators revealed that McBride was upset about Kayla being pregnant with another man’s child, even though the two had separated in September. McBride admitted to detectives that he had bought a gun and ammunition days before the shooting, intending to kill Kayla, her baby, and himself. He said the two had spent Sunday shopping at Goodwill and later returned to her home to hang out. While they were talking, Kayla was in the bathroom, and McBride was sitting on the bed. At some point, he said, “it just made sense in that moment” to shoot her. He fired five shots into her back, and Kayla didn’t even see it coming.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office described the incident as a premeditated act, with McBride going to great lengths to carry out his plan. Kayla has since undergone two surgeries—one to remove the baby and another to address her internal injuries. She remains in the hospital, fighting to recover.
Jeremy McBride is currently being held in the Marion County Jail without bond. He faces charges of attempted murder and feticide. The community remains shocked and heartbroken over the tragedy.
